  • Hummingbirds
    In Laredo, a city in southern Texas on the Mexican border, best friends Silvia and Beba know that the long summer nights of their youth cannot last forever. Their hang-out spots are so familiar but, stuck in an immigration process over which deportation hangs as a constant possibility, home still seems a fragile concept. Between bars, drive-thrus, friends' couches and the borderlands, they confront the stresses of survival, the future, and community building. For them, this means protest action for legal abortion and against border control abuses, in a politically divided America. But the dusty half-light is also a time for poetry and dreams. Their laughter and creative expression cement a sense of solidarity and belonging in togetherness. 
  • The Angry Black Girl and Her Monster
    Vicaria is a brilliant teenager who believes death is a disease that can be cured. After the brutal and sudden murder of her brother, she embarks on a dangerous journey to bring him back to life. Inspired by Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, the film thematically challenges our ideas of life and death. Bomani J. Story, crafts a thrilling tale about a family that, despite the terrors of systemic pressure, will survive and be reborn again. Trailer 
  • Wrestle
    Wrestle is an intimate and nuanced documentary that follows the wrestling team at J.O. Johnson High School in Huntsville, which has been on Alabama's failing schools list for many years. As they fight their way towards the State Championship and the doors they hope it will open, wrestlers Jailen, Jamario, Teague, and Jaquan each face injustices and challenges on and off the mat, making Wrestle an inspiring coming of age journey and an impassioned depiction of growing up disadvantaged in America today.

  • Try Harder!
    While being Asian American is the norm at San Francisco’s Lowell High School, the perceptions and pressures of the “model minority” myth intensify for a group of students undergoing the high-stakes process of applying for their dream college. Debbie Lum’s timely film reveals an American school system fraught with drained students in an ever-surmounting cycle of competition for capital-A “Achievement.” Fresh, direct, and eye-opening, TRY HARDER is a must-watch for teens, families, and educators alike.

  • The Youth Governor
    Over the course of four months, 4,000 teens in California run a simulated government complete with legislators, lobbyists, party bosses and elections. Directors Matthew and Jaron Halmy closely follow some of the teens running for governor. As film critic Nell Minow writes, "As we watch the teenage participants in the YMCA Youth and Government program, we cannot ignore the sinking realization that for better and for worse, they have been watching us. We can see that they have learned from the mistakes of the current generation of politicians.   • The Exchange. In White America. Kaukauna & King 50 Years Later
    Joanne Williams' documentary captures an experiment of sorts. In 1966, amid the Civil Rights era, students from Milwaukee's Rufus King High School and students from Kaukauna High School participated in an exchange program that culminated in a production of Martin Duberman's play IN WHITE AMERICA. Now, over fifty years later, the original participants come together with a new generation, reprising this play with reflection and new energy amid our own racial reckoning.

    Lily Topples The World follows 20-year-old sensation Lily Hevesh as she rises as an artist, role model, and young woman.   • Recorder: The Marion Stokes Project
    Marion Stokes secretly recorded television 24 hours a day for 30 years from 1975 until her death in 2012. For Marion taping was a form of activism to seek the truth, and she believed that a comprehensive archive of the media would be invaluable for future generations. Her visionary and maddening project nearly tore her family apart, but now her 70,000 VHS tapes are being digitized and they'll be searchable online.

    On February 12, 2008, in Oxnard, California, eighth-grade student Brandon McInerney shot his classmate Larry King twice in the back of the head during first period. When Larry died two days later, his murder shocked the nation. Was this a hate crime, one perpetrated by a budding neo-Nazi whose masculinity was threatened by an effeminate gay kid who may have had a crush on him? Or was there even more to it? Looking beyond all the copious news coverage of this tragic event, Valentine Road tells the story of two victims: the deceased and the murderer. With keen insight, the film connects the human wreckage of Larry's and Brandon's troubled lives-both physically abused, both from broken homes, and both searching for a sense of belonging.

And she and her best friend tool around their idyllic Dutch neighborhood on their bikes without a care. But what Babs really, really wants is a dog to call her own. So when Babs’ grandfather, an American with a rootin’-tootin’ cowboy accent, suddenly appears on the scene, he just may make her dream come true. And he almost does, in the form of Oink, a lovable and constantly gassy pig whom he gifts to Babs, much to her mother’s dismay. There’s only two problems. One: Oink can stay only on the condition he passes a rigorous puppy training program.
